It’s always a pleasure to see one of your images gracing the cover of a magazine, and I’m delighted to say that my winter sunrise shot of Southwold Pier was used on the cover of the December 2019 issue of PhotoPlus magazine. The full image is actually landscape format, and can be seen in full below, but it works well in the portrait crop used for the cover.
This was a tricky image to take because the sky was so much brighter than the sea and pier, so a 3 stop reverse ND grad was necessary to balance the exposure in the scene. This worked perfectly in maintaining sky detail, but the side effect was that the pier itself was underexposed by three stops and needed to be lifted during post-processing.
The editing worked well and the image, taken on a cold early January morning, quickly became one of my favourites of the year. Not to mention, a great first image of the year and the first of many great landscape and seascape shoots.

Inside the magazine there are also a number of my images used in the landscape filters feature. This takes readers through everything they need to know about filters to enhance their landscape photography.

Congratulations on the cover, it’s a stunning image
Thank you, much appreciated.
Wow, well done! The Fractal Filters I sell are featured in issue 160 but alas no credit to Rigu.
Thanks mate. I can appreciate that’s frustrating. I just searched for Fractal Filters and you came up 4th in the search results.
